Contemporary Artist Justin Shull

Into The Woods, Acrylic on Linen, 72 x 72 in, 2023

LANDSCAPES

Outdoor scenes that explore our dynamic exchange with the natural world: these are paintings as much about the world we make as they are about the world that makes us. Justin roots his landscapes in his direct experience of a place, allowing unexpected color to converse with the emotive potential of memory, while building his painting surface with active brushwork that alternately accumulates into recognizability and disintegrates into abstraction.

Mediascapes

Portraits of contemporary life that draw upon the broad visual context of our time, from pop culture and advertising, to art history and personal iconography. Themes of transformation and transcendence, exploration and admonition, expansion and collapse, competition and play converge in Justin’s paintings as he reflects on cultural and technological shifts that are unfolding during our lifetimes.

DIGITAL SKETCHBOOK

Most of Justin’s paintings start with a digital source image that he creates through drawing, painting, and collage on his iPad. Selections from Justin’s digital sketchbook provide a behind-the-scenes look at the images that inform his paintings and highlight his visual experimentation with the medium and the influence the digital toolset has had on his compositions, color choices, and stylistic range.
